Illegal Immigration: The Lawlessness of Uncivil Disobedience
Let's examine whether the Bible is REALLY teaching the liberal claims in support of illegal immigration, or whether they are deliberately twisting the bible to support their own political agenda. Before you read on, it would be helpful to read my previous post "Lawless Godless Rabble Posing as "Clergy" for background. (Related post: "Was Jesus an Illegal Alien?")
Before I continue to cite biblical arguments in support of protecting national borders, let me qualify this discussion. By citing the laws of Israel, I am NOT saying that America should duplicate them. Nor do I claim that it ever did so (at least not comprehensively, though some elements of biblical principles were incorporated by the founding fathers). What I am attempting to do is CLARIFY the Bible and disconnect it from what religious "wolves in sheep's clothing" are teaching -- a MISREPRESENTATION of what the Bible actually says about the law of God. In so doing, they are acting as ENEMIES OF THE STATE, jeopardizing the safety and security of our people.
First, the Bible NEVER sanctions lawlessness, not ever! That means that God never excuses human disobedience against HIM, the Law Giver. Romans 13 teaches that God has delegated a certain authority to civil magistrates. As "God's ministers" they do not "bear the sword" for nothing. The use of force is intended to be a "terror to evildoers" (criminals) as well as to protect the law abiding. But scripture clearly records examples of "civil disobedience", especially when the civil authorities ordered the silencing of those who preach the gospel. This is not "lawless" disobedience when considered in the correct biblical context -- obeying God when men's laws teach them to actively disobey Him is to obey a Higher Source of Law, God Himself! When sinful men elevate themselves above God Himself to legalize what is evil, or contrary to God's law, by demanding obedience to their lawlessness, we are forced to choose accordingly. Only then does a higher law take precedence. Except in matters of self-defense, civil disobedience for political reasons (i.e. in cases of tyranny) should be carried out only under the leadership of lesser, properly authorized, magistrates acting under the authority of the law which is being violated by the tyrants or corrupt leaders. The bible never justifies revolution. The illegal immigration "crisis" falls into the latter category. Now let's see what the Bible does teach about immigration.
First, consider that two thirds of the bible addresses the history of a NATION, Israel. There are rich lessons to be discovered there for how nations are established, built, blessed, prospered and conversely, how nations are corrupted, subverted, assaulted by wars from within and without, and ultimately destroyed when God's judgment falls upon it. Let's examine some of the laws given to Israel.1) God's law required cultural ASSIMILATION:
a. Law of the Passover - Required acknowledgement of Israel's history and heritage. Exodus 12:48 -- "If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate the Lord's Passover, every male in his household must be circumcised, and then he may participate; he will become like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat it."
b. Law of the Sabbath - Required acknowledgement of God's Law (10 Commandments) Exodus 23:12 "Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; that your ox and your donkey may have rest, and the son of your servant woman, and the alien, may be refreshed."
c. Common Foundation for Worship - Required acknowledgement of Israel's God Leviticus 17:8-9 .... "And you shall say to them, Any one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it to the Lord, that man shall be cut off from his people."
d. Penalty for Blaspheming God:...Leviticus 24:16 "anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord must be put to death. The entire assembly must stone him. Whether an alien or native-born, when he blasphemes the Name, he must be put to
death."
2 ) God's law demanded the application of EQUAL JUSTICE under the law, but expected equal OBEDIENCE to the law from both the native born and the foreigner : examples
Exodus 12:49 "The same law will apply to both the native and the foreigner who resides among you."
Leviticus 24:22 "You are to have the same law for the alien and the native-born. I am the Lord your God.'"
3) Predicated upon the foregoing prerequisites, assimilation and equal justice/obedience, God's law demanded human rights, decency, kindness and equal treatment of those not native born or sharing ethnic or family ties.
Exodus 23:9 "You must not oppress a foreign resident; you yourselves know how it feels to be a foreigner because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt."
Leviticus 19:33-34 "'When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the Lord your God."
The context of the TRUE law of God clearly reveals that what lawless "ministers" are appealing to is NOT at all related to the cause of these illegal aliens marching in protest all over America.
- The Hebrews had been INVITED to live in Egypt as guests of a previous Pharaoh (government). America's illegal aliens broke our laws to force their way in.
- The Hebrews were given the land on which they lived, cultivated and raised herds. Most of America's illegal aliens are migrants who send home whatever they earn, invest nothing here, and fraudulently have children in order to gain citizenship by dishonest means.
- The Hebrews possessed legal residency whereas America's illegal aliens return home after they've lined their pockets with the free handouts of our welfare system.
- The Hebrews were law abiding members of Egyptian society, until a law was passed mandating genocide -- the killing of their infant sons. That tyrannical regime converted them into SLAVES and deprived them of the rights of ordinary Egyptians.
- The Hebrews had done nothing to merit either revocation of their Egyptian residency or deserving of being jailed or deported for violating the laws of Egypt. Many of these illegal alien protesters HAVE broken AT THE VERY LEAST our immigration laws, and then some, but we fail to deport them even for just criminal cause!
- Finally, once the Hebrews were in their own land, the "oppression" they were forbidden to practice against foreigners had nothing to do with being forced to accept illegal immigrants. In fact, God demanded that Israel ensure that aliens abide by the requirements of His law for legal immigration or residency. (1) Once the alien met those requirements, His law had everything to do with not violating their life, liberty or property, AS CITIZENS of the commonwealth of Israel. For example: in the verses prior to the one quoted,it stipulates: "You must not deny justice to the poor among you in his lawsuit. Stay far away from a false accusation. Do not kill the innocent and the just, because I will not justify the guilty. You must not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and corrupts the words of the righteous...THESE were the ways that neither citizen or foreigner were to be "oppressed".
Finally, in the New Testament book of Acts chapter 17, the Apostle Paul asserts that while God created mankind to spread throughout the earth, He also "established the boundaries of their dwelling places". This isn't limited to national borders, but also the right to private property. There is no such thing as "squatters rights" to be found in scripture! Therefore, there is no basis for appealing to scripture to justify civil disobedience on behalf of, or by, illegal aliens here in this country. Nor does the bible have any dispute with, but rather supports, the issue of requiring LEGAL immigration, the demand for assimilation into national culture and the acknowledgement of the source of rights as delineated in the Declaration of Independence, and enforcing laws against ILLEGAL immigration! If the American government were systematically violating the rights of legal residents and naturalized citizens who legally immigrated, assimilated and abide by our laws, THAT WOULD FIT THE CONTEXT OF THE BIBLE. Misuse of the Bible to justify lawlessness, especially when intentional as these spurious claims of the so-called "rights" of illegal aliens, is BLASPHEMY.
