Understanding Liberalism and Leftists
By now, readers of this blog might have noticed that I oppose the Left, and I oppose Liberalism. Do I use those words interchangeably? The answer is : Yes and No. :-) I believe that the Left's agenda is not only dangerous to America, it is subversive and seditious. Most self-styled liberals embrace the positions of the Left, but not necessarily because they actually grasp the underlying tenets of the leftist ideology. Even without "leftist" ideological training, liberals are wholly embracing of Left's agenda and that bodes badly for our future. Therefore, it behooves us to understand the framework of basic premises that drive people to embrace "liberal" positions, and advance the cause of the Left.
First, I think that the Left is composed of people with a specifically articulated, consistent, self-aware ideology and agenda. Some call themselves "progressives", others espouse "social justice", some stick with "socialist" or even "communist". Nations have been destroyed by the Left, a worldview that has failed again and again with agonizing cost in human life. But this doesn't seem to penetrate the blackened souls of these life-hating purveyors of an evil ideology.
Liberalism on the other hand, while it shares many fundamental views with the Left, is generally not consistent, often contradictory, usually driven by some combination of "feelings", self-interest, social conditioning, and envy. Sometimes they even possess the "common sense" to jump off the liberal bandwagon on certain issues, without noticing that they did so. That's what makes them inconsistent. "Envy?" you ask. Yes, because Liberalism excuses the liberal members of society to take what is not theirs.
Liberals just assume that Liberalism equates to reality; few think about why they think that way. People are exposed to liberalism from the time they are old enough to turn on a TV or enter public schools, especially if their parents are liberal. And they are pretty easy to spot by the views they support. Let's start with the following issues:
- Abortion
- Gun Control
- Homosexual Marriage
- Universal Health Care
- Banning religious speech outside the church walls
Can we agree that people "FOR" those issues are liberal, and those "AGAINST" are conservatives? Generally speaking, yes. Then what do all of those things have in common that delineate liberalism from conservatism?
1) Liberalism is a religion. The Supreme Court has yet to issue its definition of "religion", but broadly speaking, I like the defintion articulated by Alan Roebuck: "liberalism is a comprehensive system of thought that describes the nature of reality, answers the big questions of life, and provides a code of conduct for both individuals and societies, it qualifies as a religion." Regardless of whatever system of "spirituality" they espouse, or whether the "nature of reality" is supernatural or strictly natural, liberals have one thing in common - they consciously live as practical atheists. In other words, the existence of the God of the Bible is either explicitly denied, or rejected as the ultimate source of authority over human affairs, individually and collectively. Whether or not He is deemed non-existent, they share the consensus to immediately dispose of His Laws.
For example, the Word of the Creator God Almighty informs us about life and death, marriage, property and worship. But the liberal believes he is free to define them on his own terms. Consequently, since "rights" (and wrongs!) are no longer "endowed by our Creator", liberals set about redefining rights and wrongs at their own whim. And that is what leads them to embrace abortion on pragmatic terms, rather than as the murder of a human being. Or to deconstruct marriage. Or to deny the means to defend one's life, liberty, property from those who would steal it. Government no longer becomes charged with "securing our rights" as the Declaration of Independence asserts. Liberals descend to the point of demanding that government itself steal from the "haves" to give to the "have nots" in the name of "Justice". Not only do they "reinvent" government, they "reinvent" society itself, and they "reinvent" worship so they can Play God.
2) Liberals are humanists. In God's place, liberalism enshrines and deifies Man himself. Liberals are not only practical atheists, they are self-worshippers.
Some liberals deify Man collectively (e.g. Marxists,totalitarians), and some liberals deify Man individually (e.g. libertarians, secular humanists). Some are "spiritual" (New Age, Hindus, Buddhists, etc.) and some are "materialists" (communists, atheists). Since they dispense with God and Law, there is no standard by which anything can be judged "right or wrong" either. Therefore, we are left with no rational explanation for the existence "evil". But Liberals, being the irrational and inconsistent creatures that they are, will BLAME the GOD whose existence they DENY and whose authority they rejected, for "creating evil"!! They will do anything to avoid human responsibility, and the consequences of breaking God's Law.
3) Liberals are relativists. In the absence of an unchanging source of truth, morality and law, liberals dispense with judgment entirely - unless they are busy "judging" conservatives, of course. They decide what is true or false. They conclude that reality is only a perception or subject to the opinions of the individual, a chimera, an illusion, or a social construct. The postmodern liberal will even assert that reality is, in fact, meaningless because it cannot be known with certainty. Since nothing is knowable, nothing really matters... leaving the postmodern liberal with nothing but a "Mood" and complete unrestrained "freedom" to pursue his own immediate desires, to the destruction of himself or others. Some of us would describe that as "barbarianism".
4) Liberals are arrogantly self-righteous. In the absence of God, the Lawgiver, after declaring the enthronement of Man, asserting himself as autonomous, morally independent and free to make up his own standards, liberalism then concludes that Man himself MUST be "Good". That, by its very definition, is SELF-RIGHTEOUS.
Yet, we never cease from hearing the #1 hypocrisy of liberalism. After declaring themselves "good" in the face of so much human evil and misery, they accuse as "self-righteous" those who embrace their sinfulness and look for forgiveness to the God of the Bible, receiving HIM alone as the source of our righteousness!! This is liberalism's absurdity.
5) Liberals are Utopian. Flowing out of all the above, there is yet one big problem for Liberalism. As a liberal surveys human societies, including the one he's currently living in, he spies all sorts of "evils", from poverty, disease, corruption, racism, persecution, murders, crimes, pollution, wars. His relativism (political correctness, multiculturalism) declares that he cannot "pass judgment", therefore he is "tolerant" of WHY individuals and societies are "different", (i.e. the corruption of personal responsibility, morals, laws, mores, ethics, logic and reason, etc.) Consequently, they are incapable of addressing the real causes of real suffering and misery. But misguided idealism must find an outlet for expression -- the liberal instinctively assumes that Man must "Play God" and Fix Society. That requires the acquisition of POWER and WEALTH.
6) Liberals are totalitarian. Is it enough to have personal power? No. National power? No. Global power. To fix society in the present isn't enough. Liberals must fix the future! They are the "captains of their salvation, and the creators of their own destiny". They assume the power to control mankind's evolution! Therefore, in the absence of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, Mankind must become its own Universal Savior. Since liberalism is utterly convinced of its own Goodness, it follows that Liberals are eminently qualified to impose that goodness on the whole world. So how must it view those who oppose it? As evil enemies of the common good, of course! Why? Because we oppose it on the grounds that there IS a God, a Savior and He is judge and sovereign over All. Liberals, ultimately, HATE GOD.... and in so doing, they end up HATING MAN as well.
7) Liberals are "exclusive". Make no mistake, when a liberal speaks of compassion, this is not "inclusive". Only those who agree with them and their arbitrary views of "goodness", and become willing to submit to their Power, only these are "included" in their Utopian Society. After all, they are gods now. The more power they grab, the more they demonize, and even eradicate, all who oppose what they, in their infinite, self deified wisdom have established as Absolute Good. Based on their own standards, on no authority but the tenets of Liberalism, they will point those guns they acquired when they disarmed the law-abiding under the guise of "gun control".
Do most liberals think in such stark, analytical, comprehensive terms? No. And neither do most self-styled conservatives! The vast majority just pick and choose their opinions from the buffet of "issues", and react without believing or acting according to ANY comprehensive worldview and its set of underlying premises. God knows I've debated enough of them to add up to a statistically valid "sample population". I can attest to that generalization because in almost every case, after a liberal agrees with the presentation of facts and the logical conclusion they point to, the debate always devolves to a liberal asserting "even so, I still feel that....>>>insert fallacious argument here<<<". When liberalism IS consistent and self-aware in all of the above areas, then I refer to them as the "Left". That's why they are DANGEROUS, subversive and seditious. They will abuse the judiciary, law enforcement, bend or break the law, distort the Constitution, undermine the authority of the State as well as the Church and the Bible, lie, deceive, propagandize, distort, and generally do whatever it takes to grab and hold power. And its all for our own Good. This is why only a conscious, consistent, CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE, walking in the Spirit and power of Almighty God, in submission to the King of Kings, armed only with the WORD OF GOD, can and will oppose them. "'Not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit', saith the Lord". Liberals may win temporary battles, but they will lose the war because it is built on LIES.
